Businesses operating a CCTV system are affected by the Data Protection Act 1998. Under the Act individuals have the right to access personal information including CCTV images. To enable individuals to exercise their right under the Act “appropriately sized signs should be placed in and around the area where CCTV cameras are located.” In addition the signs should, “identify the owner/operator of the system and the purpose for which the data may be used.”
